CranesSci MEMS Lab, located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Science, is the first MEMS research laboratory in India to be set-up with private funding. Cranes Software International Limited (CSIL), Bangalore, a software company dedicated to create services and products for scientists and engineers has funded the Lab's infrastructure. The mandate of the Lab is to carry out product driven research and create Intellectual Property Rights in the fields of Micro Electromechanical Systems with a mission guided by our theme of "science with conscience".
The creation of this Lab, by itself, is a major event in Indian scenario. In India, research efforts have been largely confined to the university labs or national labs and have hardly ever seen the light of the day as a product. The private companies have largely stayed away from research. Our lab aims at bridging this gap with product driven research and technology development. Cranes Software International Limited and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has a strong commitment for providing the synergy and cooperation between the two sectors for the growth of MEMS technology. The ecosystem of the lab comprises of a considerably large cross section of domain expertise available in various departments of the IISc and the market intelligence and software skills in the scientific domain available at CSIL. Efforts of research students and engineers working in this lab is directed towards long term goals of creating a stimulating environment where fundamental thinking, innovative ideas, and creativity flow freely but never loose the sight of relevance to society.
